At Grafton Primary School, we believe that every child should experience the excitement of thinking deeply, asking challenging questions and discovering just how capable they are.
Children learn best when they are encouraged to be curious, solve problems, make connections and explain their thinking.
For some children, that means additional support. For others, it means additional challenge.
Our role is to know every child well enough to provide the opportunities that help them flourish.
Beyond Knowing the Answer
Learning is about much more than finding the correct answer. It is about learning how to think.
Throughout the curriculum, we encourage children to question, reason, analyse, create and reflect. We want them to become confident learners who enjoy tackling difficult problems, exploring different viewpoints and persevering when the answer is not immediately obvious.
These habits of mind prepare children not only for secondary school, but for a lifetime of learning.
Thinking That Grows With Children
One of the distinctive features of learning at Grafton is our long-standing commitment to programmes that develop children's thinking.
From Reception to Year 6, children participate in Let's Think! lessons that encourage them to reason, discuss, investigate and solve increasingly complex problems. Rather than focusing simply on getting the right answer, these lessons encourage children to explain their ideas, listen to others and make thoughtful connections between different concepts.
Children quickly discover that the most valuable learning often begins with a question.
Philosophy for Children (P4C)
Another important part of our approach is Philosophy for Children (P4C).
Through carefully planned discussions, children learn to consider different viewpoints, justify their opinions and respectfully challenge one another's thinking. They explore big questions, develop confidence in expressing their ideas and discover that thoughtful disagreement can lead to deeper understanding.
These discussions help children become reflective, articulate and open-minded learners — qualities that support every area of the curriculum.
Learning Alongside Specialists
We are proud to have a team of highly skilled teachers and subject specialists who inspire children to think deeply within their areas of expertise.
Children may have opportunities to work with specialist teachers in science, English, music, philosophy, drama, PE and the creative arts, as well as writers, artists and musicians in residence.
These experiences allow children to encounter new ideas, ask challenging questions and develop their thinking alongside experts who are passionate about their subjects.
Supporting Every Child to Reach Their Potential
Challenge looks different for every child.
For some, it may involve extension activities within the classroom. For others, it may be opportunities to work with specialist teachers, take part in enrichment programmes or explore particularly demanding concepts.
Our teachers know their pupils well and adapt learning to ensure that every child is challenged appropriately, encouraged to think independently and supported to achieve their very best.
Because success is not measured by how quickly children complete work. It is measured by how deeply they understand it.
