At Grafton Primary Design & Technology is where children learn to turn ideas into reality.
It brings together creativity, problem-solving and practical skills, encouraging pupils to think critically about the world around them and how they can improve it. DT gives children opportunities to apply knowledge from across the curriculum in a meaningful, hands-on way, helping them understand that learning has real purpose beyond the classroom.
Nurturing Natural Curiosity
Design & Technology encourages children to ask questions, experiment with ideas and discover that there is often more than one way to solve a problem. It teaches valuable life skills — from designing and making to evaluating and improving — that build confidence and independence, giving the children at Grafton Primary a sense of empowerment and ownership of their learning. Just as importantly, it helps children develop resilience by showing them that mistakes are not failures but an essential part of learning and creating.
Creating Confidence
Children at Grafton Primary are encouraged to confidently have a go.
There is always a sense of wonder and excitement around DT as the children have the opportunity to create something from their own imagination. They experience a real sense of satisfaction when they overcome challenges encountered in the design process and immense pride when a project finally comes together. At Grafton Primary, DT teaches children that their ideas matter, they learn to work collaboratively and they discover through the design process that they are capable of achieving far more than they first thought.
Preparation for further education and beyond
Alongside practical knowledge and technical skills, DT at Grafton encourages children to develop creativity, resilience and independence. We encourage them to become thoughtful problem-solvers who are willing to take risks, reflect on their work and persevere when things don't go to plan.
Through collaboration, our children learn to listen to others, value different perspectives and work as part of a team. Ultimately, we want every child to leave with the confidence and curiosity to approach new challenges with imagination and determination.
